Tackling Energy Poverty

Listening groups Created in Kwale District and Kishuma Development Areas

Lifeline radios delivered to the Kwale District

In both the Kwale District and the Kisumu Development Areas – located on opposite ends of Kenya – specific clubs were created to listen to the Lifeline radios, while other children groups, such as the 4k clubs, the wildlife clubs and the debate clubs, requested the radios for their meetings.

In the Kwale District - ranked among the poorest in education infrastructure and resource development in Kenya  - 400 radios were distributed, 386 of which were given to primary schools in Kwale, Kinango and Msumbweni and the remainder to community-based organisations in Kwale. Clubs had an average of 100 to 150 listeners per radio, while schools had roughly 45 to 50.

In the Kisumu Development Areas, the Moi Girls, Rodi, Alwala and Korowe Primary Schools had groups created for the Lifeline radios.

The environmental club at the Moi Girls Primary School said that they enjoyed listening toenvironmental programmes on the local radio – with listening often leading to debates on pollution, green house effects, global warming and deforestation. While the Kiswahili club listened to programmes on the Kiswahili language and the debating club listened to current affairprogrammes.

391 radios were distributed to the Kisumu Development areas.
