Tackling Energy Poverty

Urgent Appeal: Radios and lights for Pakistan

The devastating floods that hit Pakistan – the nation’s worst ever natural disaster - have affected an estimated 20 million people, leaving an unknown number of people dead. By donating a Lifeline radio or light, you can help provide displaced populations with on-going access to vital information and a light source. When you’ve lost everything, the importance of reliable information and light can be critical to survival.

Lifeline Radio and NOOR Flashlight

Lifeline Energy has wind-up and solar-powered radios for immediate distribution. The radios were designed operate in harsh conditions and climates, including heavy rain. The Lifeline receives excellent AM, FM, and two shortwave and its excellent sound quality allows for group listening.

No radio is ever just given away. Radio guardians are trained in the use and care of the radios and will be responsible to ensure that they are shared for the benefit of the community.

Assistance programmes are broadcast daily, but given the lack of electricity, batteries or even working radio sets in Pakistan, very little information is actually being heard. The BBC is broadcasting six relief programmes a day in Urdu and Pashto on AM/FM and SW bands.

The radios could help inform the millions of displaced people – including 3.5 million children - living in makeshift tents about the risks of disease, how to prevent sickness and where to obtain assistance.

Our collaboration with the respected organization Reporters Without Borders and their partners will help ensure the professional distribution of the radios locally.

In addition, we've sourced a rugged wind-up, bright LED flashlight with a siren, cell phone charging port and a FM radio, called NOOR. Survivors will have no light after dark and the NOOR will provide light for walking, eating, and security.

According to the UN, the people suffering could exceed the combined total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
