Tackling Energy Poverty

Tanzania

Known for unbroken political stability and peace since independence in 1961, Tanzania has played an important role in the Great Lakes peace process and provides shelter to thousands of refugees. Changes are occurring in the political system to deepen democracy: new laws have strengthened civil society and produced a vibrant media sector, with several new radio stations appearing. However, Tanzania still suffers from great poverty, with the lowest level of formal employment in Africa. HIV/AIDS and child labour are also major problems.
