Tackling Energy Poverty

How We Use Your Donation

Each Lifeline radio reaches from 30 to 200 listeners who would otherwise not have access.

For example, in Zambia more than 10,000 Lifeline radios are being used in both community and formal government primary schools. Starting in the morning until the end of the school day, Lifeline radios broadcast school lessons to young learners. Nearly two million children are reached by Lifeline radios each school day in Zambia alone.

Radios are never 'just given away' and are used for group and community listening. We work with partner organisations and communites to ensure listening groups come together to learn vital information and to discuss what they've heard.

In Rwanda, up to 100 coffee farmers, many of whom are women, at a time share one Lifeline radio. Community radio stations broadcast coffee programmes which are helping to revitalize their coffee industry which was destroyed after the genocide.

The first recipient of Lifelights are orphaned child-headed households who save on spending what little money they have on hazardous and inefficient candles and kerosene.

“Light defeats darkness, a simple fact. Illumination has the same effect on ignorance. The Lifelight will bring these basic elements to a part of the world that needs both.”
